Casa Gatos is located in Akumal, a resort village at the heart of the Riviera Maya, halfway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Here the barrier reef crosses the bays close to shore with easy access for snorkeling with numerous dive sites in the surrounding waters. The vast system of underground caverns and rivers in the area have added cave diving to its appeal as a diving destination.
Casa Gatos is in the residential neighborhood that lies between Yalku Lagoon, the sea and Half Moon Bay. Unlike the commercial resorts that line the coast, it has the pleasant charm of a country village with shaded streets where people greet each other while walking their dogs, jogging or riding their bikes, where neighbors cluster along the way to discuss the weather and local politics. At the center is a small woodland park along the north edge of which runs a quiet lane on which can be found Casa Gatos, sheltered behind a vine covered limestone wall.
Enter through a cast iron gate and walk between hedges with fragrant white star jasmine flowers to the fountain court surrounded on three sides by the house, built in contemporary Mexican style. The wing of the house to the left comprises two comfortably sized one-bedroom apartments. The upper level has a palapa shaded balcony and the lower level opens onto the plaza. To the left is a three-bedroom townhouse with an additional kitchen/dining area allowing division into two separate apartments. The upper level becomes a two-bedroom apartment with balcony and the lower level a large one-bedroom apartment. In total, the house includes five bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, four kitchens with dining areas, sitting areas, a large living room, a laundry room, an office, and a bodega, and can sleep up to twelve guests.
The house has twenty-four solar panels on the roof, a three stage filtration & water softening system, with a reverse osmosis system in each kitchen, supplying purified drinking water.
